Training Program: Preliminary Year Program

  • Neuro-Preliminary interns spend six rotations on the general medicine floors and one rotation each in the ED, MICU, hematology/oncology, cardiology, and two electives. Electives may be chosen from any of the Department's subspecialty divisions.
  • Non- neuro Preliminary year interns do not do an Emergency Department rotation.
  • The Preliminary and Categorical medicine programs are fully integrated. Patient care responsibilities and on-call schedules of preliminary year trainees are identical to those of the Categorical trainees, except that continuity clinic is not required.
  • The Preliminary year program is structured such that if participants choose to switch to Internal medicine after their experiences throughout the year, they can continue on to their second year without having to repeat the first year. Many other programs are not structured this way, and residents who decide to switch to Internal medicine from other programs often must repeat their intern year.
  • Mentors are provided for every Preliminary year intern to help guide them through career decisions.
  • The Department offers about 15 total Preliminary year positions each year. 5 of these positions are reserved for Preliminary interns that match in Neurology. The Preliminary year track has its own unique NRMP Code when applying through the ERAS system. For more information about the Preliminary year, please contac Dr. Raquel Buranosky.
