Training Program: American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Research Program

"Each person in the research track gets a tailor-made curriculum; whatever your research and clinical interests, they're willing and able to accommodate you. This track is ideal for somebody who's serious about academic medicine. It's beautiful to be able to get into both the research and the clinical sides right away."

    John J. Pacella, MD, MS
    ABIM Research Pathway

  • This research track was established by the ABIM in 1997 with the recognition of the importance in training general and subspecialty internists as research scientists. It is intended for residents who seek academic careers in basic science or clinical research. Typically, the resident accepted into this track will complete 2 years of clinical training in the Internal Medicine Training Program. Provided that the resident demonstrates a high level of clinical proficiency during these first 2 years, he or she will then forgo the third year of residency training and go on to complete 3 additional years of mentored research in the chosen field of interest. The field of interest may be general internal medicine or one of the internal medicine subspecialties. Residents interested in the latter will need to be accepted into a subspecialty fellowship program at our institution. Depending on the fellowship program, 1-2 years of clinical fellowship training in addition to the 3 years of research will need to be completed. In most instances, the total time commitment for participation in this track is the same as a standard 3-year residency followed by a fellowship.
  • Applicants may interview for this track and prospectively for the fellowship in their field of interest at the same time that they interview for a position in the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Alternatively, applicants may choose to apply only to the residency program and then apply for this track during their first or second year of residency.
  • The ABIM Research Pathway is well supported financially, with full funding for meetings and research needs. Salaries during the research years are commensurate with those of residents in the same year of clinical training. Formal ABIM Research Pathway criteria may be accessed via the organization's website by clicking here
  • Additional information about this pathway may be obtained by contacting Dr. Tom Kleyman. Please visit our How to Apply page for more information on general application procedures.
