Career Plans:

My main interests are in transitional care and medical education. While undecided on a specialty, I plan on pursuing these interests through a career at an academic medical center in either combined infectious disease or pediatric heme/onc with transitional care of the survivors into adulthood.

Reasons for choosing UPMC:

When interviewing at Med-Peds programs, I had a "wish list" of what I was looking for in a program: equally strong internal medicine and pediatrics departments with excellent reputations, committed program leadership, a unique med-peds identity, a combined continuity clinic, a top priority on academic medicine, emphasis on transitional care, and outgoing, friendly, supportive residents. I can honestly say with UPMC Med-Peds I got all that and more! In addition, I love living in Pittsburgh! Its a revitalized city that is friendly and affordable with numerous possibilities of things to do.

Career Plans:

Enjoying Med/Peds for now. As for future plans, I'm not sure exactly what I'll be doing--there are so many choices! We'll see what the future brings.

Reasons for choosing UPMC:

Pittsburgh is my home town and I absolutely love the city and the surrounding area, so I was excited about the opportunity to come back. The Med/Peds folks seemed terrific when I visited (and they are!), and they were in the process of expanding and remodeling their clinic (which is in Turtle Creek--a great population to work with, and the clinic is now beautiful!). At UPMC, I've found a great group of med/peds residents and faculty with wonderful personalities, and I'm glad to be part of the development and changes going on in the med/peds program.

Education:

Grove City College, BS

Penn State College of Medicine, MD

Career Plans:

I have a passion for both acute care and teaching. I don't have a clearly defined career path yet, but would enjoy working as a hospitalist or emergency room attending. I plan to go on short-term overseas mission trips throughout my life, visiting and helping those who have no or minimal access to healthcare.

Reasons for choosing UPMC:

I chose UPMC for several reasons. First of all, the health system and residency program both have outstanding reputations. Secondly, all the faculty, residents, and support staff that I met on my interview day were impressive and down to earth. Thirdly, UPMC provides good opportunities to participate in academic medicine research. And, finally, I am a native to the Pittsburgh area. My college friends and family--including a 3 year old nephew who I adore--are all still living nearby. Living, working, and learning in Pittsburgh has been a joy!

Career Plans:
I grew up in Southern Africa and am planning to return there to work. I'm hoping to have both outpatient and inpatient practices in a somewhat urban setting.

Reasons for choosing UPMC:
I entered the interview season with a pretty open mind. I didn't make flowsheets comparing programs and I didn't take notes on interview days. For me the decision was very much a gut feeling and I couldn't be happier with my choice! The residency program certainly lives up to its fantastic reputation in all areas including academic strength, wonderful clinical care and research opportunites. Not only does the residency provide an extremely supportive environment, but the UPMC instiution as a whole is resident friendly. I have found the faculty here outstanding and I feel priviledged to be learning from them. In addition, I absolutely love the City of Pittsburgh. It's a very diverse place with no shortage of things to do. Finally, my husband found a fantastic PhD program at Carnegie Mellon University which made our match here perfect!
